Common Side Effects
It’s normal to experience mild pain, swelling, and bruising for a week or two after All-On-4 surgery. Fortunately, these symptoms can usually be managed with over-the-counter or prescribed pain relievers and a cold compress. If these effects become persistent or severe, though, call your dentist ASAP.
Dietary Restrictions
Overly hard, crunchy, and chewy foods put a lot of strain on the jawbone, which isn’t ideal when you’re trying to encourage proper osseointegration. Plus, the temporary denture you’ll be given initially likely won’t be as durable as the customized one you’ll receive at the end of your recovery. Maintaining a soft food diet is the best way to promote osseointegration and avoid damaging the temporary denture.
Here are some examples of the types of dishes you can eat on a soft food diet:
- Mashed potatoes
- Pancakes
- Scrambled eggs
- Cooked noodles
- Brothy soups without chewy meat
- Vegetable, fruit, or protein smoothies
Oral Hygiene
While your mouth is healing, it will be more vulnerable to bacteria, so it’s critical to keep up with a strict oral hygiene routine. In addition to brushing your teeth twice per day and flossing once per day, your dentist may recommend you also rinse with an antibacterial mouthwash. Be sure to brush gently with a soft-bristled toothbrush and non-abrasive toothpaste, and to avoid coming into direct contact with the surgical area while flossing.
Follow-Up Appointments
If your dentist wants you to schedule one or more follow-up appointments, listen to them! During this type of visit, they’ll check on your healing progress and on the state of your All-On-4 implants. Dental implant restorations have a 95% success rate, so complications are rare, but it’s still important to monitor your mouth and be vigilant. It’s much easier to fix a potential problem earlier rather than later.
